The Strategic Framework for Welsh Language Services in Health, Social Services and Social Care has recently highlighted the importance of offering Welsh language services within these different establishments in order to communicate more effectively with patients whose first language is Welsh.

The Cardiff & Vale University Health Board has responded to the Framework by offering Welsh Meet & Greet Courses to their front line staff which were taught alternately from month to month to ensure all shift staff could attend. Also, Informal Learning sessions were organised to allow staff to practise their Welsh. Welsh Language Awareness Training has also been given to Senior Managers.

A spokeswoman for the National Language Board said:
“Staff within the Health Board find Welsh sessions a helpful reminder to ensure they offer Welsh language services to patients at the first encounter wherever possible”.
