The new Archdruid has learnt Welsh

Christine James, the new leader of the Gorsedd of the Bards, has broken new ground in two ways. She’s the first woman ever to be the Archdruid and she’s also the first Archdruid who has ever learnt Welsh. Click on the link below to read her story. Success and Celebrations at Welsh Learners Annual Awards Ceremony – 5 winners with 5 different reasons for learning Welsh

Learners from all over Cardiff and the Vale came together last Thursday evening to celebrate completing their Welsh courses for the year at the Cardiff and the Vale Welsh for Adults Centre Annual Awards Ceremony at Aberdare Hall, Cardiff University.

All the learners who attended the ceremony, hosted by Siân Lloyd, BBC One, were presented with a certificate for their success over the year. An award was also given to one learner on each level for their outstanding achievements over the past year. These were five learners with five very different reasons for learning Welsh.

The Welsh for Adults Centre helping John Lewis to speak Welsh to their customers

The Welsh for Adults Centre have been teaching the staff at John Lewis a brand new course called “Welsh with your Customers” over the past few weeks. The Centre was commissioned by John Lewis to write a tailored course that would suit their needs.

The course allows staf to use some basic Welsh with their customers and it explains the importance of bilingualism in Wales. Gareth Kiff, The Principle Tutor at the Welsh for Adults Centre said:

More people than ever have enrolled on the Welsh for Adults summer course this year with over 100 enrolments. The course, which runs for 8 weeks from the beginning of July onwards, has attracted people from the four corners of the world to learn on this unique course at Cardiff University. People have travelled as far as Patagonia, the United States and many countries in Europe including Brittany, France and Sweden.

The course is also celebrating ten years of being in Cardiff after relocating from its original location – Lampeter, which ran there from 1976 to 2004.

Welsh for the Family Scholarship

Last year the very first Welsh for the Family Scholarship was awarded to 11 learners following a course at Ysgol Maes Dyfan, Barry. The scholarship enabled each of the learners to continue with their next year of Welsh for the Family studies with financial support which would not have been available to them otherwise.

On Wednesday on the Maes in Pembrokeshire four families, with at least one member a Welsh learner, competed to win a family weekend in Llangrannog. The families came from across South Wales, including Pontypridd, Hengoed and Llanelli with the Evans Family representing Cardiff and the Vale. The competition was jointly organised by the Urdd and the Welsh for Adults Centres, and is sponsored by Agored Cymru.

There will be a Ceremony for all students of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Welsh for Adults Centre that have studied in 2012-13 on 11 July in Aberdare Hall.
